In my 20’s and early to mid 30’s, I was active in DC-area Kickball, and later Volleyball leagues. As I got older, I started to feel like the easy-to-find organized leagues were more meant for a certain type of competitor. One that was me, but in the past.
Along the way, I found some pickup volleyball locations in the DC-area where I felt like I was around people of all ages and backgrounds. I subscribed on Facebook to a few groups where I learned very haphazardly of other leagues that were not as well promoted but in the DC area.
Around the same time, I started dating someone who was very into sailing. When I came with her to some of her sailing events, I saw a more all-ages vibe. And after she moved to a different area, she had to rely on word of mouth to find other sailing clubs. I’m not sure I would have known about these clubs without an introduction.
So I came up with the idea of Competr. Where leagues and clubs of all different types of sports could come together in a central directory so you can find what’s in the area. Find specifics about certain leagues. Find friends. Find a new challenge, no matter where you are in life.
So, if you are in charge of a league, whether it be an informal pickup organization or highly organized one, add your league to our directory. If you don’t see one you know of, add to it anyways.
And no matter what your position, go out there, and have fun. Go compete!
